Eichmann, Mengistu, Darfur…
So today, a couple of years ago, Adolf Eichmann got convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity. He got kidnapped by Mossad (Israeli special troops) in Argentina were he was hiding, transported in secret to Israel - tried in court and hanged. His trial was an important step in developing the legal framework for understanding the law surrounding genocide and crimes against humanity - so I guess that one man’s death is another man’s bread. Or something along those lines.
Speaking of Genocide, Mengistu Haile Mariam also got convicted today in absentia (he was not there) for genocide during the “red terror” in Ethiopia from 1977 to 1991. He sure was a mean fellow. Only march-music was allowed, and the otherwise blooming ethiopean jazz got killed. So did a lot of Ethiopians… Even though the “red terror” has stopped, the new guy in charge of the country, Meles Zenawi, is also doing a pretty good job terrorizing his fellow country-men. Lately charging most of the opposition for instigating genocide and chaos following the elections in may 2005. A report, leaked by some judges who afterwards fled the country, points fingers at Meles for mass-killings of peacefull protesters during the elections.
Going from genocide to just crimes against humanity and general evilness - today is the day where several organisations here in Oslo stage an event to bring attention to the horrors in Darfur, especially the mass rapes of women and girls and the serious lack of humanitarian access - lately a large norwegian NGO (Norwegian Refugee Council) got kicked out leaving thousands of people in desperate need of everything. Today at 16:00. I will post pictures eventually.
And lastly for a more amusing subject; I have posted some pictures from the christmas party with amnesty’s lawstudent network.
